What is Sony Starlight?

Sony Starlight Cameras have the capability to record in colour both during the day and night. The IMX307 chipset inside the camera is the latest technology from Sony. The Sony Starlight cameras use back-illuminated pixel technology giving superb colour night time images in low light level conditions with the ability to read vehicle number plates. We recommend these cameras are great to use in areas with low light conditions, maybe at dusk, dawn or complete darkness, with the help of either street lamps or security lights. These cameras give you a crisper, clearer image at night.

When operating in colour at night in low light conditions, it means the cameras give you amazing night time images. Normally when cameras record at night, they use infrared LED’s to lighten up the dark area, but because these cameras don’t use the infrared LED’s it means they are more capable of giving you a car number plate than a normal 1080p camera as there is no glare from the LED’s. These cameras also have LED's fitted so that they can be used at night when there is no added light.

Why should I choose Sony Starlight cameras?

These cameras are a low-cost solution instead of having a number plate recognition camera which can cost over £700. With the Sony Starlight cameras, you have the capability to read any number plate during both day and in low-light conditions as you can see in the second image on this page, the dark coloured vehicle is situated 20M away from where the camera is mounted and you can read that number plate very clearly. Also the van in this image is 30M away from the camera and it still is very easy to read the number plates.

What's the different between Black Box HD and Sony Starlight Cameras?

Both Black Box HD and Sony Starlight cameras work on the same format so they can work together in the same system. Both these cameras record in 1080P resolution giving you recordings in Full HD. The differences between these cameras are that as soon as it starts to get slightly dark, Black Box cameras will switch to record in black and white using the infrared LED's. Because Black Box cameras record at night using infrared LED's, it means the glare of the LED's will blur out number plates when they are close to the camera. If you have a Sony Starlight camera and used them in low-conditions, you will be able to read number plates and be able to recognise peoples faces.
